Understanding what’s typically included – and excluded – will help you avoid unexpected expenses and ensure your lawn remains vibrant throughout the season.

Firstly, consider edging supplies. While some mowers come with a basic set of plastic edging strips designed for borders, the quality can vary considerably. For a neater finish along pathways and around flowerbeds, investing in higher-quality aluminium or composite edging is often worthwhile. This will not only last longer but also provide a more professional appearance. You’ll also need a sturdy edger – some mowers include a basic one, but dedicated models with adjustable blades offer far greater precision and control for tackling uneven surfaces.

Then there are lawn collection systems. Most self-propelled mowers have a built-in bagging system, however, the capacity of these bags is often insufficient for larger lawns or particularly thick grass. Purchasing additional collection bags – typically made from durable plastic – is essential. Furthermore, depending on your lawn’s composition and the type of clippings produced, you might benefit from investing in a mulching kit. These attachments finely chop the grass into small pieces which are then returned to the soil as natural fertiliser, reducing the need for chemical treatments.

Sharpening and maintenance are ongoing requirements. Mower blades dull over time due to friction with the ground, affecting cutting performance and potentially damaging the lawn. You’ll need a file or sharpening stone designed specifically for mower blades – these can be found affordably online. Equally important is maintaining the engine; this often involves purchasing fuel stabilizer, particularly if you don't use the mower regularly, as it prevents fuel degradation and ensures optimal starting.

Don’t forget lubrication. Mowers have numerous moving parts that require occasional lubrication to prevent wear and tear. A good quality all-purpose lubricant designed for outdoor machinery is crucial. Regularly checking and topping up the hydraulic oil (if your mower has a hydrostatic transmission) will also extend its lifespan.

Finally, consider safety accessories. While most mowers come with basic guards and shields, additional protective gear can provide extra security. This might include a rollover protection system (ROPS) bar for larger models or improved handguards to prevent accidental contact with moving parts. Always prioritise safety when operating any powered lawn equipment.

It’s also wise to have some basic tools on hand. A small trowel is useful for clearing debris from around the mower deck, and gloves are essential for handling clippings and maintaining the machine. A bucket or wheelbarrow can be helpful for transporting collected grass – especially on larger properties. These items represent a relatively low-cost investment that will significantly simplify lawn care tasks and ensure your mower operates efficiently.
