What is HEPA Filtration (Vacuums)?

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are designed to capture at least 99.95% of particles down to 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen and pet dander. Vacuum cleaners with a sealed HEPA filtration system are particularly useful for allergy and asthma sufferers, as they prevent fine particles being recirculated back into the room.

What is a Warranty vs a Guarantee?

A guarantee is a manufacturer's promise that a product will work as described, often free and separate from your statutory rights. A warranty is typically a more formal, sometimes paid, contract covering repair or replacement for a set period. In the UK both sit alongside — and cannot reduce — your Consumer Rights Act protections.

What Do Pa and Air Watt (AW) Ratings Mean for Vacuum Suction?

Pascals (Pa) and Air Watts (AW) are two different units manufacturers use to describe a vacuum's suction power, and figures are not directly comparable between brands using different units or test methods. A higher number from the same manufacturer's own range is a reasonable guide to stronger suction, but cross-brand comparisons are better made through independent reviews than the raw spec figure alone.

What is Cordless?

When used for power tools like hedge trimmers and vacuum cleaners, ‘cordless’ describes a product that operates without needing to be plugged into a mains electricity supply. This means the tool is powered by a rechargeable battery pack. For a UK shopper, it indicates greater portability and freedom of movement; you aren't tethered to an outlet. However, cordless tools tend to be heavier than their corded counterparts due to the battery weight and require regular charging. What is Corded?

"Corded" refers to power tools and appliances that require a mains electricity connection via a cable to operate. In the context of home & garden products like vacuum cleaners or carpet cleaners, it signifies that the device isn't battery-powered. This means you’ll need access to a standard UK three-pin socket to use it. Consider the length of the cable – shorter cables restrict movement, while longer ones can be more cumbersome and potentially trip hazards. Also, corded appliances are generally heavier than cordless versions.

What is Carbon Steel?

Carbon steel is an alloy of iron with a high proportion of carbon – typically between 0.3% and 2%. In the context of home & garden items like cookware and bins, it refers to the base metal used in their construction. It’s known for its strength and durability, making products made from carbon steel generally robust and able to withstand regular use. However, it's also prone to rust if not properly cared for; therefore, diligent cleaning and occasional seasoning with oil are typically needed to maintain its appearance and prevent corrosion. Carbon steel items tend to be heavier than those made from stainless steel or aluminium.

What is Wi-Fi + App Control?

Wi-Fi + App Control describes a product's ability to connect to your home’s wireless network and be operated remotely via a smartphone app. This means you can often start, stop, or monitor the device from anywhere with an internet connection – useful for things like robot vacuums. Consider this when choosing a product; it suggests a higher level of automation and convenience, but also relies on a stable Wi-Fi signal throughout your home. It doesn't inherently make a product more durable or robust than one without this feature.
