The biggest mistake most shoppers make is simply buying the ‘largest’ basket they can find – this almost always results in an item that looks awkward and out of place, crammed into a corner or dominating a hallway. Careful measurement and consideration of your laundry needs are far more effective than assuming a bigger basket equals a better solution.

The terminology used to describe these baskets isn't standardised across manufacturers or retailers. You’ll frequently see terms like ‘Small,’ ‘Medium,’ ‘Large,’ and then variations like ‘Extra Large’ or ‘Mega.’ However, these aren’t fixed measurements. A ‘Small’ hamper from one brand might be significantly smaller than a ‘Small’ hamper from another. The most reliable way to gauge suitability is by looking at the internal dimensions – the height, width, and depth of the basket's interior space. Retailers often provide this information, but it’s frequently buried within product descriptions or technical specifications. Don’t rely solely on external dimensions; the internal volume will determine how much laundry you can comfortably accommodate. An 'Extra Large' hamper might measure 110cm high, 70cm wide, and 60cm deep – significantly larger than a ‘Family Size’ option.
