Storage baskets are fantastic for organisation, but to truly maximise their potential and keep them looking their best, there’s more than just the basket itself you'll need to consider. Often, initial purchases overlook these supplementary items, leading to frustration when things like dust or loose items compromise the contents.

First, think about protection. Even a sturdy woven basket can benefit from some cushioning. This doesn’t have to be elaborate – a simple layer of tissue paper, acid-free tissue (to prevent discolouration), or even unprinted craft paper is effective at preventing scratching and snagging when you move the basket around. For delicate items, consider a thin felt pad cut to size for the base – this adds an extra layer of protection against hard surfaces.

Next, consider containment within the basket itself. While baskets are designed to hold things loosely, some items benefit from a little support. Small woven or hessian liners can be used to create defined compartments within the basket, preventing lighter items from shifting and potentially damaging heavier ones below. These liners don’t need to be perfectly fitted; a slightly loose fit allows for airflow and prevents moisture build-up, which is particularly important for storing textiles or clothing.

Cleaning supplies are crucial for maintaining both the appearance of your storage baskets and the items within them. A soft brush – ideally one with natural fibres – will help remove dust and loose debris without damaging the weave. For more stubborn dirt, a damp (not soaking) cloth with a mild detergent is effective, but always test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't affect the colour or material. A small bottle of furniture polish specifically designed for woven materials can also bring out the natural shine and help repel future dust.

Storage baskets are often used to store items that might be prone to gathering dust – things like scarves, hats, or rolled-up bedding. Consider a small duster attachment for your vacuum cleaner; this is an efficient way to regularly remove surface dust from the basket’s exterior without disturbing its contents. Regular dusting will significantly reduce the need for deep cleaning and prevent build-ups of grime.

Finally, think about organisation accessories that complement the basket's function. Small drawer dividers can be useful if you are using a larger basket to store smaller items – these help maintain order and prevent things from spilling out. A small, soft cloth or microfiber towel is always handy for quick clean-ups and polishing the basket’s surface.

Don’t forget that baskets benefit from regular airing. Occasionally, removing the contents and letting the basket dry completely will prevent musty smells developing within the weave – particularly important if storing natural materials like wool or cotton.
